John Wesley was educated at oxford and
ordained in 1728. He soon joined his brother (Charles) Holy Club, they were a
group of young men interested in religious affairs. They became known as the
Methodist because of their methodical pursuit of holiness. Once ordained he
preached over 40,000 sermons outside in the rain or snow.
They
believed that logic and reason was the most fundamental distinction of
Methodist teaching. Methodists at this time believed in spending their free
time doing charitable work to alleviate the poor, like helping in hospitals,
universities, and orphanages. I read that every Methodist church has Covenant
services that is on the first Sunday of every year and the prayer given is
still the one John Wesley used (with minor modifications). They also practice
inclusiveness which means that they believe God does not have a limited group
of people who are to enter eternal bliss, while other cant, but everyone is
entitled to god’s grace and protection.
He
originally did not want to create a new church but began several small
faith-restoration groups within the Anglican church, but soon Methodism spread
and eventually because separate in 1744.
